THE HAINING STREET RAID

As a result of the police raid on alleged gaming houses in Haining Street on April 12 four elderly Chinese appeared before Mr. G. Cruickshank, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. The four accused were All Wong. Wong Yee, Cum Hoy, and Joe Tong, eacli of whom was cliarged with being tne occupier of common gaming-houses, imbers Mi 12, and 4 respectively, in Street. Mr.' E. (i. Jellicoe appeared for each accused, and entered pleas of not guilty. hub-Inspector M'Kinnon prosecuted, and asked ,tbat the cases be taken separately. It was agreed to take the case against Ah Wong first. ■Kvideiico was given by a number of oonstables as to their having, previous to the raid, purchased pak-a-poo tickets from the house of accused. Sixpence was' paid for each ticket, an entry being ii'ade in another book by the accused. After an interval the tickets were brought back to the book and checked by the drawings of the bank, ilividence was also given as to the evening of the raid,. and the gaming paraphernalia seized. Jiach of the witnesses was subjected to seyere cross-examinations by counsel tor tho defence. At the conclusion of the case against Ah AVoug the Magistrate decided that he was guilty, and convicted him, deferring sentence ■ till the cases against the three other accused were heard. After further evidence the Magistrate convicted these, but deferred sentence on all cases until, to-morrow.

OTHER CASE 3. Henry Randle was charged, with an offence alleged to have been committed five years back—that of absenting himself without leave from the Ruapehu m November of 1910. "I think tho Statute of limitations applies in this case,"/ said the Magistrate with a smile, and dismissed the information. Martin Grogan was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and fined £3 in default ten days' imprisonment for using obscene language. Wm. Kirby, similarly charged, wa-s similarly dealt with.John M'Guigan was fined £1, in default three days' imprisonment, for using obscene language, and convictcd and discharged for resisting Constable Whiteacre. For helpless drunkenness, Frederick Wilson was ordered to pay 17s. 6d. medical expenses. For' dninkehness Bryda Sheehan was convicted, and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon and Charles Baker convicted and discharged.

BOYS ON MILK CARTS.. The Inspector of Awards proceeded against Parker and Yates, dairymen, lor a breach of the Wellington Dairymen Employees' Award, in employing a boy ftt less than the award rates. Evidence was given by Mr. W. Rapley, the award inspector,_ that the boy received ss. a week, instead of £2 10s. For the defence, Mr. T. M. Wilford explained that the breach was unintentional. F{>r being employed two hours every morning the lad received ss. weekly and free milk. Mr. W. G. Riddell, who was on the Bench, said the breah was not a serious one. Boy labour was almost indispensable in the milk trade, and a. man could hardly be employed from 5 to 7 a.m. every morning, and receive £2 10s. a week, for the same. A penalty of 125., with' costs 35., was imposed, ,

CLAIM FOR RENT. ' A claim for rent was heard before Mr. W. G, Riddell, S.M., Edward Winter proceeding i against Edward Bennett for £6 6s, in this respect. Defendant said the rent had been paid. After hearing the evidence'of both pat. ties, the Magistrate gave judgment folios.. with/costs 65., and the 18s. paid into Court, Mr. A. H. Hindmarsh appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. P. W. Jackson, for defendant.

A RESERVED JUDGMENT. Reserved judgment was given by Mr. W. G. Riddell, • S.M., in the case in which C. A. Wyett proceeded against Infills Bros, for £20, moneys alleged to have been paid under-protest in respect to the sale of a motor-car. His Worship nonsuited plaintiff with costs £2 12s. Mr. T. Young appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. H. F. Von Haast for defendants.
