YSER BATTLE STILL RAGING
TREMENDOUS ATTACK BY THE ■ ; GERMANS ANOTHER ATTEMPT TO REACH CALAIS IN THE DARDANELLES SIR lAN HAMILTON'S ARMY LANDED i ' ITALY AND AUSTRIA the Yser, in Flanders, is still the most absorbing Tegion in the theatres of tie great European war, and to-day we are told that this tremendous onslaught has at the back of it another attempt to reach Calais. Sir John French's dispatch illumines the situation, and also explains how the Germans succeeded in capturing St. Jnlien. The gallant stand of the Canadians lias thrilled the great Dominion on the other side of the Atlantic, and thousands of messages have flashed across to France. Along the centre and eastern portion of the Western battlefront there is nothing conspicuous to report save that in the heights of the Meuse an important battle is developing, while in the Vosges the Germans appear to have scored at Hartmannswieler Kopt. .Reports from the Eastern theatre indicate that the Austro German line in the- Carpathians has been heavily reinforced by newlytrained troops from the Landsttwm, and "heavy fighting is proceeding. Both sides claim successes. In the' Dardanelles Sir lan Hamilton's army has disembarked on the Gallipoli Peninsula, and the general attack on the Turkish stronghold has now begun in Teal earnest. Italy and the Entente Powers are slowly settling the diplomatio preliminaries to be disposed of, so that the way may be clear for Italian intervention in the war.
