■ —- Sir Joseph Ward has been appointed a colonel in the Second Regiment of the National Reserve of New Zealand. Mr. W. G. Wickham, British Trade Commissioner, is at present on a visit io Auckland. \ Mr. J. D, Aveir, Town Clerk of Eastbourne,, is resigning from his position. His resignation was placed before the Borough Council last- evening, and received with regret. The Mayor of the borough (Mr. J. W. Organ) spoke, in terms of praise of Mr. Avery's work as Town Clerk, and councillors supplemented his observations. Mr. Avery will be given two months' leave of absence as from June 1| on account of holidays he has not received in the past. Mr.-Charles H. Howard has been admitted to partnership in the legal business of Messrs, Findlay, Dalziell, and Co.. which j will in future be carried on under the'style and title of Findlay, Dalziell,.. and Howard. ©r.--Leahy, of Napier, arrived in ■Wellington last evening en route for England. where he will proceed to the front. Mr. Louis' Salek, son of Mr. I, Salek, of the - Terrace, has heen _ passed by the . Medical Selection Board of Australia, and is now attached to the Army Medical Corps at'the Military Camp, Melbourne. He is to leave shortly for the front.
Mr. Robert Lee, the retiring chairman of the Education Board, was referred to as follows in the annual report of the board, tabled at the meeting yesterday:—"The announcement of the retirement of Mr. R. Lee from tho chairmanship and from the board on the evo of a visit to Great Britain was i received with universal expressions of deepest regret. Probably no one else has made a contribution at once so fine and so varied to tho development of primary education in New Zealand. Resourceful as a pioneer educationist, capable as an administrator, untiring as secretary, as chief inspeofcor, as member, and as chairman of the board, in his efforts to promote the best interests of education, he has well earned ;bo appreciation and the gratitude of •this community to which he devoted forty'years, rich in the finest kind of service a man can render to the State." Mr. M, J. Blomfield, representative for Mr. Joseph Blasoheck, has arrived in Wellington to make arrangements for tho raconteur's season in Wellington. Shaking at the annual meeting of St. Mark's Parish on Monday evening, the Rev. . C. F. Askew said:—"lt is with something more than regret that we part with the Rev. Mr. Ogden, who for nearly six years has been my loyal and earnest colleague. I shall not soon forget his spirit of self-sacrifice in surrendering a position on which he had sot his heart when the hand of sickness laid me low. His work at Roseneath will not. soon be forgotten. After a well-earned and sorely-needed holiday trip he will proceed to Australia to take up work in the Melbourne diocese, where onr best, wishes for his happiness and success will follow.him." Mr. W. A. Armour, ' M.A., M.Sc., Principal of the Technical College at Wauganui, lias been appointed principal of the Napier Boys' High School.— ! Press Association.
