MASTERTON NOTES
• The Masterton Chess Club opened its season on Monday night with a 6ides match, there being a good attendance of members. Teams were selected by Messrs. F. P. Welch and W. Gibson, and, after a series of interesting games, the match ended in a draw. At a special meeting of tho Loyal Masterton Lodge of Oddfellows, a motion for the suspension of fines for nonattendance was lost. , . • , The Methodist Congregation held its annual meeting on Monday night. The annual, report showed that a satisfactory year had been experienced. A vigorous effort is being made to strengthen the local Defence Rifle Corps, and a recruiting campaign has resulted in a. number of new members being, secured.
Anniversary services in connection with the Masterton Methodist Church were conducted on Sunday by the Rev. John Dawson, president of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. Fish are reported to be very numerous on the East Coast just now. and large catches of kahuwai have been made by settlers. The heavy frosts experienced during the past week have done coasiderable damage to pastures, and settlers are apprehensive concerning the winter supply of feed. News has been Teceived by cable that Miss The'ma Petersen, who left here two years ago for London, has ieceived the diploma of A.R.C.TJ., and has also gained a prize for elocution.
