WORKERS' EDUCATION
AFFILIATION OF DISTRICT INSTITUTE. At the meeting of the Wellington District Institute of the Educational Institute last night, Miss N. E. Coad moved: "That the Wellington District Institute affiliate with the Wellington Workers' Educational Association." Miss Coad thought that the institute could do good in giving some practical assistance to the association. They should, she felt, be able to grasp the significance of the movement, and, as an institute, they should help the experiment. She outlined the aims and objects of the Workers' Educational Association, and said that the workers wanted a certain class of education, along certain linos, which they said was not provided now. If successful, the association would be .a very valuable aid, and have far-reaching effects in the country districts especially. The committee was about to be set up to control the association, and it would consist of representatives of affiliated bodies. If their institute were to affiliate they would have the opportunity of sending a representative, and would be able to help along the association. There was nothing in the constitution of the institute to prevent them affiliating.
Mr. Bennett seconded the motion, and in the ensuing discussion it was pointod out that although no official invitation had been sent asking the institute to. affiliate, there had been a general invitation for anyone able to assist.
. Miss 5. Myers thought they should try_ and help along the movement for their own sakes, as well as the sake of the community at large. She had road of the progress of the movement at Home, and certainly thought a hand should be lent here.
The chairman (Sir. J. B. Hopkirk) said that he -was in great sympathy
with the movement, and thought it was going to do a great deal of good. Still they did not take an active part in secondary education, or university boards, and he did not think they should affiliate.
The motion was put without further discussion, and was carried with one dissentient voice (not the chairman's). Mr. W. Foster was appointed to represent the institute on the committee.
