£IITY . COUNCIL , ELECTION. TO THE ELECTORS OP WELLINGTON. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN— It affords,me much, pleasure to announce myself as a candidate for . your support at ,the biennial election on Wednesday next. May' I ask those 4488 electors who, voted in my favour at last election to again use their kind influence and support on this occasion, and tluu9 assist my chances of being- returned? Electors, the issue is in your hands, and I shall gracefully accept vonx verdict. The present election should be viewed with more importance than any Cfious one in consequence of our great piro being plunged into a terrible conflict,'assisting to resist'and crush a despotic and oruel enemy. This war seriously affects out own City and its citizens in many ways' through the extortionate and excessive cost of necessaries of life. I mention this, as matters . relating to the above may come before your newly-elected Council; and ; ladies | and gentlemen, should you do me the honour to elect me as one of your administrators you can absolutely Tely on my faithfully and loyally carrying out your wishes in the best interests of the citizens. My business as. a printer necessarily brings me into close touch with all classes in the community, and I claim to be thoroughly democratic in my views, being actuated by the sole desire to be of practical service to you as an active and useful citizen. In the past you have given others an opportunity to serve jt>u—l'respectfully ask for the same privilege. As a firm believer in a steady and progressive policy, my views may be considered broad and. anti-parochial. While recognising the heed for financial caution in all undertakings at this critical juncture, much useful work, now seemingly neglected, might be gradually carried, out to better advantage. At all times the real and pressing needs of evory part of the outlying suburbs should receive closer attention. A few of the many important matters that should be dealt with may bs summarised thus: An up-to-date, properly managed clearing house or depot (under Qualified inspector) for milk; the so-called Fish Market placed upon a- sounder and better footing; the further consideration and settlement of- the question of tepid baths for the. fast-growing populations of j Newtown and Brooklyn; the extra needs of Wadestown and Vogeltown; more atI tention to the further beautifying of Oriental Bay and. other natural beauty spots; better, lighting of some of our streets; more careful inquiryinto our valuable endowments at Pahiiatua (worth probably £10,000 as present values go), and to ascertain what their real revenue earning capacity is (I would strongly oppose selling this endowment unless the City receives a fair equivalent); investigating the position of all City endowments, and making an effort to so arrange matters I that the City would derive the best results from these valuable sources of revenue. lam opposed to an increase of rates. Tho wages nuestion as affecting all Corporation employees to be placed 011 a more equitable basis and permanently settled. Further oncouragement to to given citizens to beautify and improve their surroundings; also to continue the work of afforestation. I advocate tho immediate introduction of a scheme to gradually abolish slums and unsightly areas in the City by moving in tho direction of obtaining tho co-opera-tion and help of tho Government in a scheme to purchase sites from time to time in these congested areas for the building of model homes for tho people. This would gradually settle the slum difficulty and vastly improve the City's 'appearance. Tho position of Libaries, Zoo. and other • matters would not escape my notice. In conclusion, ladies and gentlemen, I ask you to carefully consider my views as briofly expressed in the. foregoing, and as a. citizcn of many years' experience, I trust yon will honour mo with your confidence. Meanwhile, leaving the issue in your hands, I have the honour to he,' ladies- and gentlemen, Yours sincerelv. A, n, ffORKBMW, 70 Eiddii'ord Street, xal. 161. • —Advt,
