FIRE 'ALARMS IN HOTELS.
"Now that there has been this awful loss of animal life in an Auckland stable," said a gentleman interested in fire suppression yesterday, "I expect the authorities will be on the alert to. see that stable buildings are adequately protected against fire.' It is always the way—nothing is ever done until there is a calamity, then there is a feverish activity for a month or two. Take-the hotels, for example. What hotels in Wellington have fire alarms communicating with the fire station? When the next big hotel fire takes place this provision will be made. • In the meantime there is not sufficient protection for the public. Who on going into a hotel dreams of looking for the fireescape or of any means of getting out of the building if a fire occurs? .. He probably knows'the way from his room ■to the lift or the stairway,' and that Is about all. Every hotel accommodating over and above a certain number of people should have firo alarms .on every 'flat communicating direct with the station. That is only due to the ■ travelling publio surely, yet nothing of the kind is provided. People are apt to say and think that all is well because there has not been a big fire in Wellington Jor some time, but should we wait for a big fire before such .provision is made?. I say no."
