ENEMY SEVERELY PUNISHED ON THE YSER
REPULSED BY THE BELGIANS HEAVY FIGHTING IN THE WOEVRE REGION London, April 8. A Belgian official message states: "The Belgians have completely expelled the Germans from the western side of the Yser, in the Driegrachton region, witli heavy losses. The Germans fled in disorder, abandoning machine-guns and ammunition." SHARP FIGHTING BETWEEN THE MEUSE AND MOSELLE. (Rec. April 9, 9.45 p.m.) , Paris, April 9. Official.—'"Since Sunday we have inflicted heavy losses between the Mouse and the Moselle, capturing strong .positions at Les Eparges, the Bois d'Ailly, •and several villages. Elsewhere we nave further advanced. At Les Eparges on Thursday night we held our ground despite three violent counter-attacks. _ We' have already counted a thousand corpses. Wo wiped out a company during a lively infantry action near Lamorville, south of Lea Eparges, and took prisoners the ten survivors." THE HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT London, April 8, 4.40 p.m. The High Commissioner reports: Paris reports: "In theWoevre, the French troops have, maintained their gains, despite extraordinarily violent counter-attaokn At Les Eparges (a village 15 miles'S.E. of Verdun), tho last Gorman counter-attack by aregiment and a half was completely repulsed, with* enormous losses, dead bodies covering the ground. Three hundred Germans who were pushing their attack before our front were mowed down by machine-guns, none of them escaping. "At Bois Brule we have taken one of the enemy's trenches. London, April 9, 2.35 a.m. "Paris reports continued success by the Allies between the Meuso and the Moselle yesterday. In an infantry action in the Bois d'Eiatorville a German company wa6 destroyed. In the Bois,d'Ailly additional trenches were captured and counter-attacks repulsed. In the Bois de Montmare tho Frcnch gained a footing in the enemy's defensive works. "Summarising the resultsof the Allies' attacks during the last four days, the report points out the extensive gains in several places, • tho displacement of the Germans from, strong positions, the defeat of repeated violent attempts to regain these, and the formidable losses of German troops."
