. BELGIAN SUCCESS IN FLANDERS GERMANS RETREAT IN DISORDER ' I PLIGHT OF AUSTRIA RUMOURS .OF SEPARATE PEACE ITALIAN. FLEET ON SECRET MISSION The war news to-day tells of heavy fighting in the region round about : Verdun, in the Woevre district, l where the- Germans hava been forced to give ground, with heavy losses, and despite futile counter-attacks. The Belgians on tho Yser have inflicted sharp punishment on the German troops who attempted to force a crossing; and the enemy retired in disorder. The fog of war has descended on the British front, and also on the Champagne district. In the Eastern theatre the Russians maintain their advantage in the Carpathians, and further successes are reported. There are rumours of a separate peace in. order to avert the disintegration of the Empire. One of the Galician Generals has been pensioned, ostensibly on the ground of ill-health, but a witty Viennese has suggested that it may soon be necessary to establish a special hospital for invalided , Generals. Italy's advance towards active intervention is slow, but .the progress of her diplomacy has reached the point of agreement with the policy of the Entente Powers in regard to the Balkan situation ; added to this, i 3 the report that the Italian Fleet has sailed, on a secret mission. On the sea the submarine pirates have sunk a trawk,r, and it is also reported that Norwegian airmen have discovered a pirate base on the Norwegian coast and ordered the buccaneers to quit or suffer internment. Turkish cavalry has been seen near El Kantara, on the Suez Canal, but an exchange of shots has sufficed to disperse them from the neighbourhood.
