FIRES IN THE CITY

At 3.45 p.m. yesterday the Fire Brigade received a call to No. 24 Thompson Street, where a firo bad broken out in a four-roomed dwelling occupied by Mr.'Sydney E. C. Sherwood, and owned by Mr. Orr, chemist, Lambton Quay. There was no one at home at the time of the outbreak. The contents, which were insured for £150 in the Commercial Union CfDco, were damaged. The building is also insured in the Commercial Union Office. At 5.50 p.m. the Brigade was called to tlio New Zealand Loan and Mercantile buildings, in Featherston Street, where a (ire hud started in a wastepaper basket. The wall of the room was scorched a little, but otherwise no damage was done.
