BOWLS

WELLINGTON AND PETONE

TIE FOR THE PENNANT

Before a bowl was played on Saturday the pennant contest stood at an interesting stage.\ The Wellington Club, which had gone through without a loss, had to meet Petonc with one loss. This meant that if Wellington won the pennant was won, but if Wellington lost that club would again have to meet Petone. It will therefore be learned with interest that after some extraordinary results it was found on counting the totals that Petone had scraped a win by one point, and the pennant was still fluttering uncertain between the two clubs. The extraordinary feature of the day's play lay in the fact that whilst the Wellington rinks on their own green secured the big margin of 19 points to the good, Petone, on its green, managed to get home by a 20-point margin. Thus each club on its own green was led to expect victory, and was amazed to hear of the wide margins established at each end. The scores were as follow:— At Wellington Green.—Wellington— Grenfejl, W.yatt, Brown, Churchward (s.), 15; Petone—Elvine, Curtis, Fraser, Stephens (s.), 17.
