HUTT PARK COMMITTEE
TROTTING CLUB LEASE GRANTED. A meeting'of the Hutt Park Committee was held last evening, there being present: Messrs. Hodgins, Hobbs,' Harcourt, Towasend, M'Ewen, Brocklebank, and Brrfssel. After some discussion;relative tothe election of a phairman, the secretary (Mr. W. Gardner) was appointed pro tem, for the purpose of electing a permanent chairman. The resignation of Mr. H. Baldwin' was received with regret, and it was decided to place on record the valuable services, 'rendered to the park by the-late chairman.
Messrs. M'Ewen' and Hodgins were nominated for the vacant position of chairman, and on a vote being taken Mr. M'Ewan was declared elected.
The'sums of £2 10s., being balance of subsidy from the Hutt Council,. and £10 from Eastbourne Council, were- received'.
: The Education Board wrote' regretting "its inability to meet the committee on the park as arranged, and ; renewed its request for a conference on the ground. The letter pointed out that the board had no end to meet except the public interest, and believed the site to: be.a good one. The chairman. stated that, personally ha was in ; favour of meeting the board and if the site could be agreed upon, ■he would advocate that an area of five acres be granted for the purpose. : Mr. Hobbs moved: "That this'committee cannot see its way clear to meet the board, as it does not favour any portion of the park, being used for education purposes!" This was carried: Mr. Hodgins moved pursuant to notice: "That the resolution of the.comniittee passed on May 3, 1912, prohibiting, the sale of intoxicating liquor, on the park be rescinded. This was seconded by Mr. Hobbs, and after a lengthy discussion, in which Messrs. Townsend, Brockleband, and Harcourt took part, a vote was taken, Messrs. Hobbs, Harcourt, Brassel and the mover voting for, and Messrs. M'Ewan, Townsend,- and Brocldebank against. A deputation from the Hutt Valley Trotting Club waited upon the committee, and the proposed lease of ihe park was dealt with. After considerable discussion of the various clauses the lease, which is for 15 years, at a rental of £100 per annum, for one or two days, and £25 for two extra days if required, was accepted.
