ENCOUNTER WITH BURGLARS
SENSATIONAL EXPERIENCE. : (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, March 11. ' Ernest Varley, a. grocer in Dominion Road, had a.sensational encounter with -Wo burglars at midnight. Varley; who had been sleeping on the shop premises 6inoo. a previous attempt at burglary) and bad armed himself with a revolver, heard the till open in an adjoining shop. Shortly after ,he heard a key . inserted in the lock of his front door, which had been also fastened with a bolt. Varlej slipped out of bed, released the bolt and two men entered.
Varley stepped back into a corner be. bind the door, and in doing so knocked down some tins of jam. ; Immediately he covered the burglars with his revolver, ordering them to put up thair hands. He states that one of the burglars drew a revolver, whereupon'he (Varley) fired, Bhooting the man through an arm. Both burglars bolted. Varley followed across a vacant section and captured the wounded man,, whom he then escorted to the police star tion, where he, was placed under arrest. The second burglar escaped.
The name of the prisoner is Brio. Street, aged eighteen, a well-built man 6ft. high.
