NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. EXAMINATIONS DISCUSSED. A full meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants ivas held in their meeting hall, Accountants' Chambers, yesterday, the president (Mr. James Brown, of Dunedin) being .in the chair. ;

The question of the return of certificates of membership by persons who have ceased to be members of the society was discussed, and it was decided to insist on. the return of theso certificates in every case. As regards the issue of "touting" and other, unprofessional oirculars to secure business—a matter on which the council recently addressed a letter .to all members—it was resolved that strong measures be taken to put a stop to any methods of this kind, which are Strictly forbidden by the council. , A somewhat lengthy' discussion took place upon the question of the procedure to be adopted in the audit of solicitors' trust accounts in connection with the regulations gazetted under the Law Practitioners' Amendment Act, 1913. The legal position having already been fully dealt with, and a circular having been issued to members setting out the opinion of leading counsel, it *as decided that it should be left to the discretion of members as to individual action in each particular case. The society's procedure, regarding investigations into unprofessional conduct, was. dealt with and amended, with a view to simplification. Lengthy consideration was given to the question of the society's examinations, and it was ultimately resolved: ' That no' sufficient reason has been adduced to justify the society in making any change in the preliminary examination at the present time, but that the members of the Executive Committee are instructed to keep before them the dsirability of- seeking to procure improvements in the matricwation examination, and of obtaining representation of the society on the University Senate."

The annual meeting of the society was fixed for Tuesday, August 24, at Wellington.
