VICTORIA CROSSES
SOMfi OF THE RECIPIENTS (Rec. February 20, 1.5 a.m.) • London, February 19. Viotoria Crosses are awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander, of the 119 th Battery, for bravery, eulogised on August 24. Against overwhelming odds he saved- the guns, LieutenantColonol Alexander and three men dragging them away by hand, enabling _ the 6th Division to retire without serious loss. Drummer Kenny, of the Gordon Highlanders, for fearlessly rescuing five wounded on October 23 at Ypres. He previously twice saved and carried out machine guns into action. Lieutenant Brook, of the Gordon Highlanders, killed while leading two attacks on October 29, preventing the Germans breaking the lim at Gheluvelt. At the time it was impossible- to organise a general counter-attack. Captain Valentine, of the South Staffordshire Battalion, killed while leading the attack at Lillobecko on November 7.
Lieutenant Depass, for entering a German sap on November 24, and destroying the traverse, despite German bombs. Arthur Martin Leake, who received the Viotoria Cross in 1902, was panted a clasp for conspicuous, devotion : duty at Zonnebeke in November—as unprecedented honour, for it is equiva lent to two Crosses.
