The evidence given at the trial of De iWet for treason showed that De Wet, in addressing a commando, stated that the rebellion was planned' when Herfrzog left the Ministry. Do Wet, in another speech at Vachtkup, remarked that when they got. to Johannesburg they wduld act - like the Germans, and make tho capitalists pay. witness-: testifiedthat Do -Wet, in addressing the: burghers, said that Maritz ;had. .been .placed, by God's providence,: .on ithe .-.German border, whero they oould get arms.: apd ammunition irom the- Germans. .■■■ The latter were always their friends, and Maritz and the German governor l had an'understanding that when "the republio was established Germany., would .acknowledge its independence', and they would only have to give Walfisch Bay to Germany.
