ALONG THE ALLIES' BATTLE FRONTS
VIOLENT BOMBARDMENTS FRENCH RIGHT ADVANCING IN ALSACE Paris, January 24. A communique states: The enemy violently bombarded our new positions at Nieuport and Lombaertzydo. Our artillery dispersed tho infantry at the moment when they were beginning an attack. The artillery expelled tho enemy, from a trench near Vermelles, silenced or demolished several guns in the Aisne Valley, and destroyed works at Our infantry carried a trench at Berry-au-bac. The infantry engagement at Saint Hubert and Fontains Madame continues. The advanced trenches were several times lost and retaken. ■ ,„.,,„,.,. f) Our Right in Alsaco progressed at Hartmanns Wcilerkopf. We lost and then recaptured a trench near. Steinbach. Paris, January 25. Official—"The Germans heavily bombarded tho district northward of Zillebeke. The fighting at Four-do-Paris has terminated. We have maintained all our position except fifty metres of tronches which wore demolished by tho enemy's bombs. Wo are nearing the enemy's entanglements at Hartmanns Weiler Kopf, in Alsaco." The High Commissioner reports, under date London, January 'JA, 5.20 p.m.:— "Paris reports that at Niouport and Lombaertzydo the enemy violently bombarded new positions that had been captured by tho Allies, but the attack was repulsed, the artillery being especially successful. Everywhere on our front tho Allies' batteries have maintained a continued and effective fire. grotmd. At Steinbach' an attack prepared by a violent bombardment enabled the enemy to capture one advanced position, but by a vigorous counter-attack wo recaptured it." London, January 25, 5-20 ajn.:—"Paris reports that the enemy bombarded our entrenchments north of ZMebeke. There was a sharp fusillade at Chateau Sorantin. Bombs were fired into Arras and Laboiselle. In the Argonne the fighting in the region of Four-de-Paria resulted in the Allies maintaining all position except fifty metres of trench demolished by the enemy's heavy bombs. The struggle in Alsace continues." HEAVY, ATTACK BY GERMAN ARTILLERY. (Bee January 25, 7.55 p.m.) m, -. m ~, „ „ , London, January 24. The "Daily Chronicle s Havre correspondent states that the Germans have resumed a strong offensive towards Saint Georges, directing a heavy artillery fire which is compelling the Allies to fall back. Neither side occupies the village.
