CASE OF SUNDAY TRADING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Dunedln, January 19." 'An interesting case connected with the sale of soft drinks on Sunday was heard in the Police Court this morning, when a shopkeeper was charged with having kept open his premises at St. Clair for the purpose of trading. When spoken to by the police, the defendant alleged that he was quite within his rights in keeping the shop, open for the sale of Boft drinks. For the prosecution it was stated that the whole question was one of whether the selling of soft drinks Constituted a work of necessity or .not. _ There had been Magisterial decisions in somewhat similar caseß, but these were in£The Magistrate, after commenting upon the practice elsewhere, said the defendant had been guilty of a breach of the law, and fined him £1. Defendant's counsel said his client wished to get a decision of the Supreme Court, and leave to appeal was granted.
