ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE DISASTER
GAOLS COLLAPSE, KILLING PRISONERS PATHETIC SCENES IN RUINED CHURCH GOD'S MERCY IMPLORED ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Berrioei.) London, January 18. The collapse of gaols caused by the Italian earthquake killed many prisoners. The Bishop of Sora celebrated Mass at an improvised altar in the ruins of a church, among which 10,000 survivors were kneeling. There was another shock during the Mass, and the Bishop lifted the chalice imploring God's mercy. The communicants responded with anguished cries. Forty additional lighter shocks have been recorded. They did little damage. THROUGH THE STRICKEN AREA. AN OLD MAN OF MAGHANO. (Rec. January .19, 5.30 p.m.) London, January 18. An Italian correspondent, describing his journey through; the earthquake area, states that he arrived at a magnificent green plain, and in the centre of the plain was a great grey spot. He asked an old man: "What's that stone quarry?" The old man replied: "That is Maghano, a town whicn formerly had l four thousand inhabitants." "What are you doing here?" asked the correspondent. The man responded: "I have lost my wife and sons—everybody. Now I am awaiting death."
