■" II — I ■! ■ ft 1 REVENUE & EXPENDITURE FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS i HI brief statement was made by the > Minister of Finance yesterday on the . revenue returns for the nine months, . of the finanoial year, the period ending L December 81. > "The revenue for the nine months was . £8,545,826," said Mr. Allen, "or i £231,526 more than the revenue for the first nine months of last year. But to , make the comparison fair there should [ be'added to this year's figures £112,600, , a sum made up of several land tax j items which did; not come into the : Treasury until January, 1915. j • "The expenditure out of the Consolidated Inind was £8,996,868, an increase of £606,611 on the expenditure ' for the . first nine months of last financial year. I ought to say, however, I that the bulk of the inoreases for the full year are included in this total. I don't anticipated that there will be any increased expenditure in the next three [ months. For instance, tho item interest ' and sinking fund is £139,000 more this year, which is accounted for by the fact that we have bad to make provision '. for the interest'on the war loan. Hie 1 bulk of the extra interest and sinking fund has already .been provided for. The expenditure on the Post and Telegraph Department is £102,000 more, and oh, Internal Affairs £58,000 more, but this latter amount includes the election expenses. There has also been £68,000 more to provide for education, ' and out of advances from the Consolidated Fund I have'had to provide for over £100,000 for wheat.' This amount will, of course, be refunded; "The Public Works Fund expenditure is just £7508 more than it was for the nine months of last year —approxftnately the same. • This shows that we are keep- '■ ing public works going at the same rate as last year. Our expenditure on pub-, lie works for the nine months just ended was £1,620,745." ' ' Do you expect to declare a surplus P Mr. Allen was asked. "Ask me something easy," he replied.
