ENEMY'S NIGHT ATTACKS REPULSED THE ADVANCE ON THE CARPATHIANS Petrograd, Jant-ary 18.. A communique states:—"We reocoupied at night a trench at Grumise (P Gombin). All the defenders were killed. Two German oounter-cttaoks were fruitless. "German night nttaoks on the (Mki. Vissuffka front were discovered by our, searchlights, and were repulsed. "Our artillery baulked the enemy's efforts to bombard Tarnow (forty-five miles east of Cracow)." The High Commissioner's report to the Prime Minister states:— "Petrograd roports that the Russians have recaptured a trench at Gombin on the left bank of the Vistula, lulling all the defenders. Two German at>-' tempts at an offensive south-east of Rawa were doteoted by searchlights, and checked. The enemy's attempt to bombard Tarnoiy with big calibre guns was baulked by the efficiency of tho Russian artillory." THE MUSCOVITE ADVANCE ON HUNGARY RUSSIANS HOLD' ALL IMPORTANT PASSES. V London, January 18. An officer who has returned from the Galician front states that the' Russians hold all the important passes. He records a brilliant feat by a Caucasian regiment. Holding the tails of their mountain pipnies, in the nighttime, they scaled an apparently impassable summit. Getting' to the rear tney surprised and secured the surrender■of a Honved (Austrian Roserves) battalion.— ("Timeß" and Sydney "Sun" Services.) AUSTRIA'S NEW FOREIGN MINISTER. (Reo. January 19, 11,65 p.in.) Amsterdam, January 19. Count Burian de Rajecz (the new Austrian Foreign Minister) has accepted the Kaiser's invitation to visit hira at his headquarters. German newspapers note with pleasure that the Count has submitted, at the outset to Germany in the direction,of foreign policy. RUMANIA'S MARCH TO THE FIRING LINE. London, January 18.
