JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. 1 (From Onr Special .Correspondents.) NAPIER. The election to-day in connection with two wards of the Hawko's Bay Rivers Board resulted in Messrs. H. Campbell and G. Purvis being returned for Pukahu. and H. Glazsbrook for Olive. The defeated candidates were Messrs. T. Talbot and H. Lan Simson. Miss Gould, of Carterton, has been appointed a Sister at the Napier Hospital. The Napier branch of the Navy League has collected £16 lis. towards the fund .for purchasing oilskins for the men of H.M.S. New Zealand. The Hastings Belgian Relief Fund now amounts to £2937. Efforts are being made to establish a Winter Garden Association in Napier. CARTE RT,ON. The Carterton Volunteer Fire Brigade has selected the following team to represent the brigade at tho United Fire Brigade' 6 demonstration and conference at Timaru nest month:—E. M'Kenzie, F. Jackson, H. J. M'Kendie, A. Desmond, D. Byrne. C. Lee.was elected as delegate to attend the conference and also act as emergency in the team. Another mishap has occurred.at the head works of the Carterton water supply, and no water is running into the settling pond. Work was commenced on Monday morning to readjust matters. Bandmaster H. Woodley has resigned his position in the- Carterton Brass Band, and Deputy Bandmaster W. Spooner w filling the vacancy pending the appointment of a successor. MASTERTON. Another batch of recruits left Masterton on Monday for Trentham, and eaveral veteran soldiers, who have volunteered for service in Samoa, left on Tuesday. Civil Service and sohool teachers' examinations are at present being conducted in the Technical School, under the supervision of the Rev. A. T. Thompson. At the fortnightlv meeting of Stonehenge Lodge of Druid's, Bro. H. M. Wilton was presented with a P.A. collar and a handsomely-framed diploma. The Y.M.C.A. Swimming Club has decided to hold its first annual carnival on Thursday, February 25. The Masterton Homing Pigeon Club has decided to fly its first young-bird race from Palmerston North on February 24. Masterton visitors to Castlenoint have noticed a white porpoise gambolling off the rocks. The fish has been there for some time, and does not seem disposed to_ change its quarters. Some people think it is either "Pelorus Jack 1 ' or a near relative. Mr. R. J. Earaes, at one time on the staff of the "Age," has been appointed managing editor of the "Northern Advocate," published in ' Whangarei. A circular on the question of noxious weeds, which has been issued bv the chairman of the Agricultural Board, was discussed by the Masterton County Council yesterday. 'Die general opinion was that blackberry was the most dangerous weed in tho Dominion. Councillor Toogood advocated tho repealing of tho Noxious Weeds Act entirely, as it was impossible to enforce it. A subcommittee was ultimately set up to report. News of the tragic death of Mr. Herbert Hodge at Te Horo has come as a shock to liis numerous Wnirarapa friends. The deceased lived for many .years at Gladstone, and was highly "«- teemed. Tie was the oivnnr of Chillies, liorsil, and other racehorses.
