—9 — ' GERMAN PRISONERS FROM SAMOA SEVERE SENTENCES (By Telegraph.—l'mea Association.} Auokland, Sunday, midnight.^ Eight Gorman and one military pris- .• oner, seven _ New . Zealand, officers ofi the Expeditionary Force, and twentytwo men returned to Auckland to-night from Samoa by the Navua. The returning officers included Major Pinwill ' (General Staff) and Captain Eastwood. The military prisoner was a memberi of the Artillery Field Service Corps, who was tried by a Field Court-martial and sentenced to 90 days' imprisonment with hard labour, on 'charges of theft and drunkenness. One German, for proceeding to the American, port of Pago Pago without permission ws,s sentenced to three ' years' imprisonment with hard labour in Mount Ed6n Gaol. Another. German, for assaulting a provost-sergeant, was sentenced to two years' hard labour. Others, for changing their places of residence without permission, were, sentenced to six months' imprisonment, ■ the last German undergoing 120 days' ■ hard' labour for being out of doors between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., contrary t<. . the regulations. The. leader of the German 1 party s when deprived of his' personal posses* sions at the police station to-night, ' voiced the feelingd of himself and his compatriots with an emphatic "Gott in Himmell" ("God in Heaven I")
