MODERATE LEAGUE
BRANCH FORMED I AT LOWER HUTT. • ■A meeting was held at the Lower Hutt Lyceum last evening for the purpose of forming a branch of the New Zealand Moderate Party. Mr. E. P. Bunny presided over an attendance of' about 45, including several kdies. In explaining the objects of the leaguo, the chairman said the .Party was at one with the Prohibitionists in abhorring the abuses of alcoholic liquor, but differed from them as to the 'remedy for these evils. _ Whilst their friends would evoke the aid of legislation to bring about a euro for drunkenness, etc., the Moderate Party did not support a step so drastic. It was the healthy ana moderate use of alcohol they were put to encourage, and unless they woke up, they would find that even the moderate use of liquor would be debarred them. He urged all present to join the league. Mr. A. S. Menteath and Mr. Peterkin also spoko. Mr. J. F. Atkins moved:—"That a branch" of the New Zealand Moderate Leaguo bo formed to consist of tlio following (with power t<j add):—Mr. E. P. Bunny, T.'C. Dawson, F. E. Broderick, F. H. Wells, T. Peterkin, J. F. Atkins, and Mrs. Atkins.." This was seconded aiid carried, and upon membership cards being distributcdit is understood that a large number joined the league.
