CITY RATES
ISSUE OF,DEMANDS DELAYED. Though the now rates were struck threo weeks ago by, the City Council there is no immediate prospect of tho rate demands being issued, as the fractional proportion of each rate has been altered, and tho' work entailed in ascertaining exactly tho amount due under each rate by every ■property-holder in the city is 0116 of considerable magnitude, although elaborate tables arc propared to assist tho Rates Office clerical staff. The . suburban portions of tho city were not revalued tin's year, and on that account it is anticipated that tho rate demands for those districts will be issued towards tho end of September. In tho case of the city ,1 longer delay must occur. Objections to the new valuations are being made in plenty, and it is assumed that those which are not settled by consultation with the ValueivGencral (Air. F. W. Flanagan) will engage the attention of the Assessment Court for some considernblo time. At the earliest tho city (proper) rate demands cannot bo issued before tho end of October, and more probably it may bo Novembor before tho issue is made. As tho second half-3'carly demand is issued in December, a demand will bo made for tho two amounts, hut tho council will bo prepared to meet those who find it a hardship to meet the ycar'3 rate account.
