SUNDAY "LIGHTHOUSES" SLY GROG-SELLERS ROUNDED UP. Heavy fines and punishment by imprisonment were. imposed on certain sly grog-sellers by Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., in the- Magistrate's Court yesterday. Tho facts of tho cases disclosed no especial features, and the method disposing of the liquor was similar to that practiced by previous sly grog-sell-ers. John Williamson (who received a sentence of two months' imprisonment) pleaded guilty to four separate informations of having unlawfully sold liquor to police constables on July 6 and 12. Inspector Hendroy (who prosecuted) stated that a considerable amount of drunkenness Lad been noticed on Sundays in the To Aro quarter of the city, and the accused had been kept under observation. He acted a "lighthouse," and armed with a bottle or two of beer, went the rounds of Tory and Taranaki Streets, anxious to quenoh the thirst of all those "dying for a drink"" Two constables on different dates had Tin difficulty in procuring liquor from Williamson, who was at present undergoing a sentenco of. one month's imprisonment for being found,on licensed premises .after hours. '■ Wm. M'Kay, who was represented by Mr, P. Jackson, pleaded guilty to a charge of selling liquor without a license. Tho facts in this case were similar to those iii the previous case, and a fine of £10, in default one month in gaol was imposed. '. IJrank Hayward, a restaurant-keeper, of Tarauaki Street, also pleaded guilty to a charge of sly grog-selling. His promises were raidea by the police on tho night of July 18, when a quantity of liquor was found. Ho was fined £10, or a month iuigaol. Horace George.Munt and Charles Hanson, who were.found on Hayward's nremisoSi were each fined £1 and costs 7s. . John Aitken and David Grindon were each fined 10s. for entering licensed pro- ' mises after hours. SERIOUS CHARGE." An aged man named Charles Printzen was remanded till July 29 on a charge of having committed au assault on a' girl aged thirteen years. Bail was allowed in the sum of £50. NAVAL MEN IN TROUBLE. Several naval men, against whom various charges were preferred, were convicted and handed over' to the Naval authorities to be dealt with. The offenders were:—Wm. Fred Brown and Fred Milan (creating a breach of the peace); Alfred Charles Remment (obstructing the police);' Albert Frost (obscene language). , THE UNDERWORLD. On charges of being an idle and disorderly person and with resisting the arresting constable, Vincent Furniss was remanded till August 3. Bail was refused. A sentence of seven days in gaol was imposed on Mary M'Cuiley, who was deemed to be a rogue and a vagabond, in that she was found by night on private property, without lawful excuse. . ■ INSOBRIETY. • Thomas Elliott.was fined 40s. for insobriety ; Walter Harmer was fined 10s.; nnd George M'Carter was convicted and discharged. Two first offenders had their bail money (10s.) estreated. For drunkenness, May Gibbons was> sentenced to one nionth's imprisonment. On a charge,of damaging .a window, tho property of Rupert Victor 'Pefrett, she was.ordered to pay tho cost of the damage done, Bs., in default seven days'-imprisonment. ,■ .' ■ For breaches of their prohibition orders Jane Schaare and Daniel M'Randle were fiucd £1. • ■..■■■ ■■' MAINTENANCE CASES. . For disobedience of a maintenance order, Frederick. Smith was sentenced to one,month's imprisonment: warrant to be suspended if ss. per week is paid off the arrears (£l9 55.). and regular payments under tho original order are main, ■tained. ' V < Charles Duncan was. ordered to pay 255. per week towards the maintenance of his wife, Mary Maxwell .Duncan!
