ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
KNOCKED DOWN BY A CAR. OLD MAN"-SERIOUSLY INJURED.' A one-legged man named Denis Cronin was knocked down by a tram, driven by Motorman "White, in Courtcnay Place, yesterday afternoon, and received injuries to his ■ head which necessitated his removal to the Hospital. The accident took place at the Taranaki Street intersection at 3.55 p.m., and the injured man was attended by Dr. Mackiu. The Hospital authorities reported last evening. that Orouin'a condition was serious. WOMAN HURT^BY A MOTOR-CAR. A married woman named Isabella Hurst, who resides at No. 74 Kelbuni Parade, was accidentally knocked down by a motor-car on Lambton Quay, yesterday afternoon. She was removed to Orr's chemist shop, where her injuries, • a lacerated wound behind the left ear, were attended by Dr. Gilinour. The car was.owned and driven by Edward Hubbard, of 22 Hams Street, and eyewitnesses, in their 1 report to the police, sfate that Mrs. Hurst attempted to cross the road, hesitated, and was struck by the mudguard of the car. After receiving medical attention, Mrs. Hurst was removed in Mr. Hubbard's car to her home. DEATH OF A CHILD. ! Mr. .W. G. Riddell, S.M. (District Coroner) held an inquest yesterday concerning the.death of George Edward Morton, a seven week's old child, which ' died on July 24 at No. 4 College Street. Dr. Kington Fyffo having given evidence that death was duo to an attack of cramp, a verdict was returned accordingly. TWO BLACKSMITHS INJURED. At the Petone Railway "Workshops yesterday two accidents occurred in the blacksmithing department. 'During the morning Richard Shardlow .was. engaged ■ ■in> the manufacture of railway' "buffers," when a piece of white-hot "scale" flow upwards from the anvil and entered his eye, burning it severely. Af- - ter first-aid had been rendered, he was taken to his home.' In-the afternoon a blacksmith' named H. Ashcroft was using the steam hammer for the,'purpose of welding some iron, when the tongs that held the metal in position on the anvil, slipped, causing a foul blow. A large piece of metal, and also the tongs bounded upwards, striking Ashcroft on the chin, injuring the jaw-bone, and .loosening several teeth. He was attended to by ' Dr. "Wilkinson. MAN BURNED TO DEATH.' (Br Telegraph.—Praia Association.) . Waipawa, July 21!Harry Ellery, contractor, was bume<? to death in a whare, at Elsthorpe on\ Saturday night. He was last seen aliv« three hours before the fire was discovered, :'-,■ . CLERGYMAN FOUND DROWNED. Dunedln, July 27. The body of "the Rev. Ei.L. Wood* , house was found in the Molyneus River this morning, some distance below tho railway bridge. He is believed to have fallen into the river when crossing tho bridge on June 19. > WOMAN'S RASH ACT. ' New Plymouth, July 27. An elderly woman named Elizabeth Gibson attempted to commit suicide today. She is stated to have had a dispute with the owner of tho house she was occupying as to her tenancy, and apparently fearing that she would be turned out, inflicted injuries with: , a knife to her arm and throat. She was removed to tho hospital, where it wa? | Sound that her injuries were not serious CYCLIST KILLED BY MOTOR-CAR . Napier, July 27. About sis o'clock this evening, Maurice Hume Black, aged from 40 to 45, who is employed as a carter and general farm-hand at tho Old People's Homoj was on his way into Napier riding an ordinary push bicycle on the Taradale' Road, when he collided violentlv with- a motor-wr, driven by 'Mr. M. H. Strachari.' Black was thrown heavily to the ground, his face and head being badly crushed. % Death was appar. ontly instantaneous.
