TRAMWAY WORKS
LOOPS AND DUPLICATIONS. Now that tho big loqp at the terminus of tho tramway lino lit Lyall llav has been completed in anticipation of tho coming summer, the Tramways Department is turning its attention to other small improvements that will facilitate the tralfie in rush times.
It has been decided that a loop is needed at the Island Bay terminus, and the council lias authorised the work. Somo of tho residents desired that tho council should continue tho lino at right angles to tho terminal section down to tho beach, carry it along tho Parado, and south to tho main road again, but this schemo has been considered' too costly, and besides the running of tho cars along tho Parado is considered to ho an alternative to bo avoided 011 account of tho number of children that frequent tho road in front of tho tea-rooms. A loop will bo laid down, but it will probably ho confined to the main road a little to tho south of the present terminus.
Another work (part of a schemo' of complete duplication of the line) to be put in hand almost immediately is the duplication of that length of track between North and South Kilbirnie, which lies between tho Wellington Road and Vallanco Street intersections. This .will bo nothing more, for tho present, than a long siding, hut ono day when tiie district develops and moro money is available for such works tho whole of tho lino from Moxliam Avenue to the terminus of tho lino at Lyall Bay will be duplicated.
Good progress is being made with the erection of tho new Parsons turbine at .the. Mercer Street power-house. It 'should b? in running order by the end of the month, when it will probably be placed in commission, whilst the present turbine, which has been running continuously since its erection, will be spelled for overhaul. Bv the end of tho month tho winter "pinch," as far as the loading is concerned, will have eased off, and there will be no need to rim'the two turbines at the same time. At tho present rate of expansion of municipal trade in the supply of electric light and power there will soon bo a sufficient demand for both turbines,
