DRUM BAND

PRIDE OF THE sth REGIMENT. The inspection of tho Senior Cadets at Newtown Park on Saturday last by General Sir lan Hamilton was the first occasion on which the Wellington public have had the opportunity of hearing the sth Regiment drum band sinco its reorganisation in November last. TJp till that time the regiment had six drum-, mors, and only four drums, and consequently ereat difficulty/was experienced in the matter of practice. In .January last more dTums were procured, and new members were enrolled. Just before the Takapau camp a drummaster was engaged, under whom the drummers proceeded to Takapau, where they put in some good practice. On their return thoy were supplied with new Guards' model drums, with which they paraded at tho aforementioned inspection for the first timo. This is the onlv band of its kind in New Zealand attached to the Territorials. Drum-master Sergt. J. Lee, who is conducting the hand, has had extensive experience in drum bands, having served the last seven years as drummer in British regiments stationed in India and Africa.' After the local drum hand's nerformanco at Takapau, it is stated, other regiments in other parts of Now ZoaJand will probably form drum bands, in which case there will be contests between tho various regiments.
