THE TURF.

{ NOTES AND COMMENTS.

By Glexcoe.l . There sliould-bo a big crowd at Hastings to-day for 41ic opening at the f ■tmmi Meeting of the Hawkc's Bav t r cc . kc y Llub - Tho weather promises to be fine, and tho going is always good at Hastings. Fair sized fields will contest the various races. ' The Cup will have a field of 17 runners Multiply, Hhvitapu, and Cherubim being withdrawn. .Multiply is not at the mooting, Cherubini has gone sore, and Hhvitapu has been withdrawn oit account of the death of Mr. A. F. [ Douglas. Ladoga will now bo ridden by C. Emerson. W. Young will be on Jimpcrador, B. Dccley on Bvron, J. Buchanan on Bloriot, Bell on Kooya, L. Wilson oil Sir Knox., and W. , l<yan on Haskayne. Kooya is a strong iancy at Hastings, owing to a good mile done by her on Monday. The brown mare lias been most consistent this yearj and already 'W.' Bell has won three Cups on her. Merry Roe and Postilion mav dispute favouritism in the Porangahaii Handicap. The former lias her Trentham form to recommend her, but of courso that was over a distance. Still she is «uch a quick beginner that site is not likely to have lost her brilliancv. Postilion has not raced for a considerable time, and may require a race to sharpen him up. Gipsy Belle ran' with vcrv hard luck each day at Awapuni, and if she goes off with tho field ,shc should Min a good race. Both Valhalla and Lady.Louisa have plenty of admirers. Papalitz has been very consistent lately, and is expected to 'perform well in- the Hack Hurdles; while tho same must be said of Hurakia, who is to contest tho open hurdles. Hymen and Dame Rumour are both two-year-olds, and in consequence tliev, will havo all 'the best of the weights air* the Maiden Hack Race. Downham did not show his best form at Trentham, and in the lot he will meet in the Nursery Handicap the Welcome Stakes and Electric Plate winner may havo a lot to say. Mr. T. H. Lowry's mare Tho Hague was thought good enough to contest tho A.R.C. Oaks against Merry Roe and Bonny Helen, two good winners. In the Autumn Handicap to-day there is nothing the class of either of the above, and as Stepniak's daughter is nicely weighted she may be heard of over tho last furlong. Mr. A. E. WliytOj secretary of the Wellington Racing Ciub, and Mr. W. H. E. Wahklyn, secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, wero passengers by the Napier express yesterday on their way north to do the Haivke's Bay Cup Meeting. Tho Marlborough Club sliould havo a good meeting to-day. The Mapourika was crowded with excursionists on Monday evehing, and again last evening, and the attendnnco at Riverlands to-day promises to be a record. That useful two-year-old Elevate, who ran so well at Trentham, has been sent across for tho Maiden Hack Race, of six furlongs. Stepney is in the Ugbrooke Welter, with 9st. lib., and Sir Saracen is top weight in tho Electric Hack' Handicap. The locally-owned horse was unfortunate enough to get a bad bump at the start in tho concluding event at Trentham, in which he was just beaten after a good finish when coming very fast.
