NEW PLYMOOTH-OPUNAKE RAILWAV. Nsw Plymouth, April 24. Tho Mifiistet of Public Works to-day received a deputation of ovor forty representatives of tlw Western Taranald Railway League, Chamber of Commerce:, North Taianaki Dairy Company, importers and exporters, coastal settlers, and prominent citizens of New Plymouth on tho question of a railway from New Plymouth to Opunake. The deputation emphasised the hardships of the settlers in the Opimake district, and urged that either tho Government, at onco eoinisenco the lino or bring in legislation next session giving power to settlers to set up a local railway hoard with borrowing powers to build a railway themselves., tho loans to bo State guaranteed, ■: • ■ ' Tho Minister replied thai it wa.s impossible for the. Government t,p start tho railway at once, aisit therefore ,ho favoured tho railway board, admitting that the line was profitable. He had thought- the legislation introduced by liini last sessifln covered tho matter and allowed' existing local bpdies Jo set ap a railway board, but as it had been represented that a bonrd of local bodies' wfl-s no use he would receive a deputation in Wellington and with them give tho necessary time to draft a- Bill for nest session. A deputation frotn tho Railway League was appointed.
