CHURCH MEETING

ST. AUGUSTINE'S, PETONE. At tlio annual meeting of parishioners of St. Augustine's parochial district, the report stated that the total liability remained the same as last year, viz., £63, but £50 had been paid off the church. A sum of £50 had Seen raised towards erecting a schoolroom in Petone East. Some £28 was in hand from receipts for hall rent. A section had been Sought at the corner of William and Heretaunga Streets for £200, and the building was now in course of erection. The sum of £100 was owing on St. Augustine's Hall. The following officers wore elected:— Vicar's churchwarden, Mr. F. Matthews ; parishioners' churchwarden, Mr. H. Johnston; vestry,' Messrs. Castle, Fowler. Hill, Andrews, Abrahall, Shcrwin. lidding, Claridge, Irviss, and Hicks. Synodsman, Mr. Matthews. The following motion was* carried unanimously:—"ln accordance with tho decisions of the General and Diocesan Synods this annual meeting' of parishionors of the parish of Petono in the diocese of Wellington again pledges its support to tho objective of tho Biblo in Stato Schools League, and.onco more requests that a referendum of the whole peoplo of tho Dominion be taken upon tho question. This meeting expresses tho conviction that inasmuch as tho referendum has been repeatedly requested by tho rcspeetivo governing courts of four denominations representing 75 per cent, of the population, which request has been reiterated by tho constituencies of theso denominations, and further endorsed by a request in writing, signed by upwards of 133,000 individual electors, the Government is more than amply justified in r»cilitating the wishes of such a largo proportion of the people. Moreover, as tho request is not asking tho Government to decide on tho merits of the leaguo's proposals, but to allow tho peoplo of tho Dominion to come to a decision themselves on tho matter, this meeting would regret any action on tho part of the Government which by leaving this question standing over, would thereby constitute it a disturbing factor at tho next general election."
