EARLY SETTLERS
THE PROPOSED MEMORIAL. Tho Early Settlers' Association held two meetings at Petal© on Wednesday. The first, which was held in tho after* noon, considered tho proposed memorial totho memory o.E early settlers. The Hon. J. E. Jenkinson presided, and nave, an address in which ho dealt with the formation, work and objects of tho Early Settlers' Association. Among those present were the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Kwan), ttie Hon. C, M. Luke, Mrs. G. M. Siielson (Palmerstou North). Messrs. F. London, H. A. W. M'Kemwe, Clements, and Jtttld. After discussion the following motion was carried: "That this meeting affirm tho. suggestion of commemorating tho arrival of the early Settlers on 1 Pctono beach in 1840, on the spot (or as near ns possible) to where tho Sanding was effected) by the erection of.a jno-j moral, the form of which shall ho de-' eided at a later meeting." Messrs. M'Ktvitn and London were empowered to form a sub-committee te further the movement in I'ctoii", In the evening a social re-union took iilaeo in tho Borough Office, Petone, about forty heina present. The lloik >T. I'. Jcnkiitson presided, and. among those present were; Messrs. .!, Jones, 0. P. Broekolbalik, H. Findiay, R. Mothcs, and Mosdamos Morris alid SneJM>ii. The oldest identities nrdsent wore Mr. J. Clements, who is 09 years of age, nnd Mr. It. Brown, 82 years. Tho evening was spout in relating ane-e» dotes of early tiroes, musical items being also given. Tho Hon. Mr. J'onkinson spoke regarding the proposed memorial, mid said that a big effort, was to ho made to gather the necessary funds. Apologies for absence were read frmn Mr. T. M. Wilford and Mr. J. W. M'Ewan.
