CHEAP CABLE MESSAGES

Replying to Major Archer-Shee (Unionist),, in the House of Commons, Mr. E. S. Montagu stated that the new rate for week-end messages to Australasia via the Pacifio cable would becomo operative early next :nonth. Messages would be delivered on the Tuesday. They would he forwarded the whole distance by telegraph, if necessary, without additional charge. Major Archer-Sheo inquired why the further reduction advocated '<y the Dominion's' Commission had not been made. Mr. Montagu: "It is a matter in tho discretion of the Pacific Cablo Board." Major Archer-Sheo inquired if Mr. Montagu was awaro that the Governments of Australia and New Zealand were ready to provide tho deficit, if any.' Mr. Montagu: I do not know that from memory, but theso matters concern other countries other -than the Dominions, upon which tho loss, if any, would fall. Mnjor Archer-Sheo' inquired whether the suggestion that a daily cable letter service with Australia should bo established was receiving tho consideration of the Post Office. Mr. C. E. Hobhonse (PostmasterGeneral) replied that tho master primarily concerned tho Pacifio Cablo Board, which at nre-sent was not prepared to consider the suggestion.
