.LOCAL COUNCIL FORMED. ' 'A lecture'was delivered by Mr. G. A. Gri'eoii, of .Auckland,-secretary arid- orS al «scr of- tho-New Zealand Association ot Nurserymen,, to a large, gathering -of ■members of the trade in F. Cooper and Company's rooms last evening. .-Mr. T. ftaughy of Lower. Hutt,, presided.. . .•flio address was on. the origin • and aims of the -National ■ Association of Mirserymen. Mr. Green dealt,with the linos of activity "of the association, arid gavo details of the doings at the conference which- was' held at Auckland last month. Future work.included: (a) betting tip a certificating board to deal with the claims of new fruit and flowera to recognition; (b) the samo board 'to be also constituted a nomenclature b'oard, to, work in cdii junction VitF the Poniological Board of Australiaand'the Royal Horticultural Society of England; (c) toe registration of all nurseries in the Oominion; (d) the inclusion in the, New i> ruit, Industries Act (or by special Act) or provision to trademark any' new : horticultural product's and thus protect; the raiser in his right of propagation and distribution.; (e) the ■ formation of district.councils wherever possible to assist and advise the executive of tho national Jody "in matters of local or general interest ,to the nursery sub-trades; (f) tho suppression as far'as i»ssiblo of auction sales of nursery stock, as it is held that such methods of saloaro not in the best interests of either buyer or seller, aiid aitord no guarantee to the purchaser as tor-quality or correct naming; .(g) , the establishment of recognised standard grades for -nursery stock- starting iii'st vitli fruit trees, so as to establish equal grades,of equal vahio throughout tin .uomiiHon; (li) compulsory gradinK bi Gpvenimont experts of Jail fruit for export, the association claiming that'the tucuro tor the fruit qxport trade is verv loirful, and that it will in tinio be hardly sccoud to that of the dairy export. ..* ■ ■ ~~■ •:.' At the conclusion of the" address it was decided, on the motion of Mr V "H Gibbons, seconded by Mr. A. M'Millah! to form a ■Wellington Nurserymen's Council. • ' ' i ..-■■. ;

Association for arranging the At a subsequent' meeting of ' the council, Mr. Thomas' Waugh (Hutt) was elected ohwiman, Mr. Geo. Cooper vicechairman, and Mr. Ed. Gibbons secretary and-treasurer, together with a'committee- of sis.
_ Similar councils , are now in operation m all parts of the North Island. '
