TRAM DISPUTE

STRONG OBJECTION TO DELAY. Strong objection was taken at tho meeting of the Conciliation Council yeQ-. terday to a proposal to further adjourn the hearing ni the Wellington Corpora-, tion tram.v.-iys dispute. The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) presided'. ■■ '

The City Enginerr (Mr W. H. Morton) appeared for tho corporation, and asked iliat the hearing should bo adjourned for o. fortnight. Tho City Council, ho said, had only received tho documents in connection with the dispute on March J, and had not had time to draw up counter proposals. Mr; W. C. Noot, the union's representative, said that-the dispute had'been under discussion foi - months past, and proposals had been made by tho council. Mr. Morton agreed that proposals had been issued by the council, but as tho union had rejected them, the wholematter had to be gone into again. He was not prepared to go on.' Mr. Noot was in favour of at once proceeding with tho matter. Ho thought that the town clerk and tho. Mayor could have dealt with' the question when they received official notification from the union.

The Commissioner thought that the adjournment should k> granted, and mentioned March 20 as a suitable- date. Mr. Noot (to the Commissioner): I may bo wrong, but it appears to me that you are studying tho interests of tho employers more than the union. The Commissioner: You are absolutely wrong. Mr. Noot: Well, that is how it appears to me. ' 'Hie Commissioner: lour remark, is quito uncalled for. You must have a very dim intelligence if it appears that way to you. 1 After further discussion it was decided to adjourn to March 20, Mr. Morton to notify the Commissioner if ho was prepared to'take thocase at an earlier dato. .'.'.
