SUMMER" ARRIVES, WEATHER ON ITS BEST BEHAVIOUR, f SCENES IN THE CITY,. HOLIDAY FIXTURES FOR TO-DAY. _ After all the gloomy prognostications, official- and otherwise, about the weather Wellington was likely to experience at Christmas, tho lovely summer days recorded on Wednesday and yesterday came as a' cheerful and welcome surprise. True, there were occasions when the prospects did not appear to bo too bright, but those never lasted long, and on each occasion tho sun triumphed, and tho packed clouds rolled . away. Yesterday tlio weather was really superb. An almost cloudless sky gavo tho sun ono of tho raro ; chalices lie has had this summer of warming up things, and ho did it with . a vengeance, making Christmas Day of 1913 an outstanding bright spot in the memory of an altogether queer rear. Ihe beat of tho siin was'pleasantlywm- ' pered by a light breeze," which came iresn and'clean across the harbour laden with tho incense of tho country beyond. . : Should tho weather experienced on 'Christmas Eve and yesterday hold good, there should bo a raro crowd holidaymaking to-day. ~ To-day's Attractions. I Tlio chief holiday attraction as far as .Wellington is concerned will be tho big ; Amateur athletic meeting at which tho crack Americans are to compete. 'This event, which lias been keenlv looked forward to by all lovers of athletics, is •sure to attract a- lar£o crowd to the 'Athletic Park. Tlio meetins will extend over to-morrow., ~, At Father Lane's grounds, Lower Hutt, the annual Catholic nicnic will be held; there will bo a sports and ■ huntsmen's carnival on the Trenthain Racecourse, and a picnic will be held at Muritai in aid of" the 'Catholic education funds. Racing peoplo will have their choico of Tanherinikau and Awa- : P«m (Palmcrston North), and those who hud pleasure on the ocean bho will be afforded the opportunity of crossing the Strait to I'ictpn in the Wahine. A good tramway'.servico will bo maintained throughout tho day. between tho city and Lyall-Bay, Seat'oun, and'lsland Bay. Harbour excursions to Muritai and Day's Bay will he run through- , ■ out the day. The new Kelburno Company's motor-bus will ply round the Queen's Drive. There will be matinees at His Majesty's Theatre, and. tho King's, and tho various continuous, picture theatres will 1)0 open, throughout "the day and evening. At the Opera House the new American play, "Within the-Law," will bo performed-for tho first time.
