It was introduced hy a letter from the secretary of the Xew Zealand Secondary School Teachers' Association, who .stated that the association had been in communication with the Government in orcjer to hotter conditions for teaehei's in regard to both status and salaries. Secondary teachers as a wliolo believed that most governing bodies would, iF they could, pay better salaries. As matters wero at present, lack of funds and (the association believed) insufficient capitation payment for frcc-pbice pupils, prevented the governing bodies from paying the salaries to which the teachers thought they were entitled. The association asked for the board's help and co-operation. The chairman (Mr. A. dn B. Branden) : We may state that we are quite in sympathy with any scheme which will enable us to pay higher salaries to the staff. It was reported that there was a debit balance of £203 7s. fid., bnt against that there were fees and Government capitation dues which would give a credit balance of £4530 18s. 7d. It was decided to adopt as a general principle in tho admission of free-place pupils the system of giving priority to those applicants under thirteen years. The resignation of Miss Lynch from the staff of tho Girls' College was accepted. Miss Sr. SlT,can was npnrovod n.R teacher of music at tho Girls' College on the recommendation of tho principal. Mr. AV. p\ Ward reported, thai having conferred with Jlr. .T. G. W. Aitv'ken, representing the Education Hoard, and having considered the reports of the college principals, he did not think ■ that there was anv need for further action -in regard to the boarding of pupils.
