On Wednesday evening a euchre party was given at tho Petone bowling paviilion by wives of members. There was a good attendance, and as a result £9 was raisod for the piano fund. The ladies' prizo was won by Mrs. Hutchinson and tho men's by Mr. E. S. Jones. Tho movement to preserve Box Hill, in Surrey, as a memorial to tho long residence of George. Meredith, will commend itself to lovers of literature every- - whoro, even in Australia., where Meredith has never attained any wide popularity, though by no means neglected. Nor is tho literary association of this picturesque locality confined to Meredith. It was during his walks on Box Hill that Keats is said to have finished "Endymion," tho place is mentioned by DWoe, and 1 the names of Madame do Stael, Fanny Bunney, Wordsworth, and Coleridge aro connected with it.
