POST OFFICE FESTIVITY.
PEESENTATION -OF TEOPHIES.
A pleasant social gathering was held in tlio General Post Office last evening under the auspices of the Social and Literary Club anil the Swimming Club. Officers of the Department and their lady friends attended in considerable numbers, and a etichre tournament and dance provided plenty of amusement. The swimming trophies were presented by the Hon. R. H. Rhodes, who was introduced, to the company by Mr. W. It. Morris (Secretary to the Post and Telegraph. Department). Mr. Rhodes congratulated the club members on getting back to their old quarters. The prizes he-was to present were for swimming, hut he was euro that they could hold their own not only in swimming, but in other branches of athletics. Seeing so many ladies present he regretted that he had no prizes to present to them. In England ladies had formed numerous swimming clubs. He hoped that himself or some future Postmaster-General might have the privilege of presenting prizes to ladies. One thing ladies might do was to urge the municipal authorities not to forget tepid swimming baths. There was no reason wlhy Wellington should not be provided in this way as well as Christchurch. Mr. Rhodes congratulated the Wellington team upon having won the. challenge shield last season, and urged the members of the swimming club to do all they could to ind.uce other members of the sarvico to join. Amidst applause, Mr. Rhodes then presented the shield he had donated to the Wellington team consisting of Messrs. P. Wilton (captain), T. E. Duffy, J. H. Geddes, 11. H. Little, L. C. Porgie, and H. Greener. The applause was renewed when a handsome silver bowl, also the gift of the Postmaster-General, was presented by him to Mr. H. H. Little, who !h,as won it for a year. Mr. Wilton briefly thanked the Post-master-General for malving the presentation, and asked that the shield be kept for the next twelve months in the room of the secretary (Mr. W. R. Morris). At Mr. Wilton's call cheers were given for the Postmaster-General. The shield and bowl will bo displayed for some days in the shop window of Messrs. Littlejohn and Son, Lambton Quay, the firm responsible for their manufacture.
