DRILL & DISCIPLINE.
9 . THEIE LOOAL VALUE. The salutary inflncnco of drill and discipline upon tho young men of toKlay was emphasised by tho Hon. J. Duthie in tho course of his Addrcss-in-Keply speech) in tho Legislative Council yesterday. "Times are easier than, of old," said Mr. Duthie, "awl young men have a great deal more leisure. , It is not employed to the -best advantage. - One does not wish to grumble at crowds of thousands Tushing to footSail matches or cricket—they are right «mongh in their degree—but, with horseracing, they are too common in this country, and it will be a great benefit to the young men in the Dominion if they are taught drill and service in the field. Under discipline they will be made, more marily and better able to appreciate their relative position in life." (Hear, hear.) ' Some needless opposition to the Defence 63' stem had been, aroused, Mr. Duthie went on to remark, by a mistaken interpretation of a proposal advanced by the Minister for Defence regarding a voluntary expeditionary force. The Opposition press had made the very most of it to Injure the cause which, some of them professed their desire to promote. The question of the expeditionary force had largely influenced mothers, who remembered seeing" in their own case, or in that of their • neighbours, young men to South Africa-and on their return failing to settle down again. However, there was e very remote chance of anything of the eqrt 'TecuTring, and the immediate effects •of. the drill and discipline were of even greater importance than the preparation for defence.
