SMALLPOX.
OUTBREAK IN SYDNEY.
OF MILD FORM. TRACED TO A CLOTHING FACTORY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyrisht (Rcc. July 2, 0.45 a.m.) Sydney, July 1. A sensation has been caused in Sydney by tho announcement of a serious outbreak of smallpox. Since April 12 last numerous cases of what was described as chicken-pox have been under treatment. The Government medical officers set to work quietly to investigate the outbreak, and some cases were removed to the Coast Hospital. After a careful diagnosis they declared that the disease was smallpox in a very mild form. The source of infection is stated to be a clothing factory at Redfern. So far, sixty cases have been traced. All necessary precautions for quarantining the actual cases and contacts have been, taken. Mr. Holman (the State Premier), in an official statement published with a view to allaying public alarm, states that the Government medical officers are adopting every possible step to meet the situation. The disease, he states, is of a mild form.
