BIG EARTHQUAKE.
EXACT LOCALITY NOT KNOWN. 1 1. STARTLING SEISMOGRAPH RECORDS. By Telegraph—Prcfp Association—Copyright Brussels, Juno 20. A violent earthquakojwas recorded this morning. It occurred probably in tho Pacific islands north-east of Australia, (Rec. June 27, 10.35 p.m.) Sydney, Juno 27. Tho Government Observatory reports that an extremely large earthquake has been recorded, commencing at 32.59 p.m. 011 tho afternoon of Thursday; tho second phase occurred at 1.1 p.m., and tho principal surfaco waves occurred at 1.16 p.m., these being of enormous amplitude, and reaching their greatest intensity very rapidly. Tho amplitude of the largest was 23J millimetres, considerably 'in excess of any other tTemor ever recorded here. Afterwards the tremors continued until 3.7 p.m. 'l'ho records were of the "sawtooth" pattern, and their origin about 2500 milos from Sydney, probably in tho same neighbourhood as tho earthquake recorded on May 30 last, when earth tremors affected the seismograph from 8.85 ofm. till 8.46 a.m. RECORDED AT MELBOURNE. (Rec. June 27, 11.20 p.m.) Melbourna, June 27. The Government Astronomer states that the earthquake recorded was one of tho most striking ever taken here. The locality was probably north-east of Australia, in the Pacific.
