PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Philosophical Society, hold at Victoria College on Wednesday night, was well attended. Professor 1. H. Easterfield presided. A resolution was carried expressing the society's regret at the loss scicnco had sustained through the death of Lord Avebury (Sir John Lubbock). On the motion of Mr. R. W. Holmes it was decided that a technological section of tho society should be formed. The other business of the evening included exhibits by Professor Laby of electrical apparatus for use with alternating currents; exhibit by Mr. C. A. Cotton, M.Sc., of an apparatus for opaque projections; notes' on calibration of copper constant an thermo-electric couples, by E. O. Hercns, M.Sc., Government research scholar; the nature of gamma-rays from radium, by P. W. Burbidge, M.Sc., Government research, Jacob Joseph, and 1851 Exhibition scholar; reflection of X-rays with photographs of tho effects obtained, by W. A. Stuart, demonstrator in physics. Several speakers complimented Messrs. Hercns. Burbidge, and Stuart for their interesting papers.
