BRAVERY AT FATAL FIRE.
CONDUCT FOR RECOGNITION (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Christchurch, June 0. An application for the recognition of the bravery shown by Constable George Baker ami J. H. Higginson, a_ grocers assistant (both of Fcatherston), in rescuing Patrick Crossey from a burning dwelling in Featherston on March 28 last, has been received by the secretary of the JNow Zealand Royal Hurnano Society. .Tho facts as disclosed in thodeclarations accompanying tho applications are that at 2.80 p.m. oil the date mentioned a firo broko out in tho dwelling,of P®t« r Jacobsen. Constablo Baker got into the buiilding through a window, and HigginBqn followed. Hearing groans in. another worn, they took hold of each other and succeeded in dragging Crossey out of tho room and out of the burning building. Almost immediately afterwards tho building collapsed. Jacobsen was bunted to death',- Crossey was burnt about the lace ind hands. •
