(Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M.) THE GAOL BREAKERS. ' DONOVAN AND LEWIS SENTENCED. GAG AND SANDBAGS. Patrick Donovan and Thomas John Lewis, the prison escapecs, were before the Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged with being incorrigible rogues and vagabonds. Thev had broken from the Terrace Gaol before tho expiry of their sentences. They were also charged with having stolen a quantity of clothing from the houso of Charles Linburgh, at Northland. Accused tileaded guilty to the charge arising out "of their escape, and were seir'tenced to sis months' imprisonment, which 19 to take effect from tho time ot the expiry of their present sentence. Chief-Detective Broberg stated that on Friday evening last the accused wore locked in their cells, but, next morning, it was discovered that they had escaped. It was ascertained that they had got out of tho cells through becoming possessed of ii key which unlocked their door, 'i'he.v were arrested by Constables Pearson and Warner on Saturday afternoon, at Makara, and they wero then armed with sandbags, which, however, they did not use. * . Respecting tho theft charge, formal evi-; deuco was given as to the ownership ot tho clothes, and the accused wore then committed to tho Supremo Court for trial. Both had pleaded not guilty. Detective Dempsey said that when ho charged the accused with tho offenco oil Tuesday afternoon, Donovan remarked: "Breaking and entering! You 'have got to prove it. We did not break and enter any place." For failure to attend military parades, Albert William P.nvson was convicted anil discharged; Philip Scoringe was ordered to pay 7s. costs, in default 24 hours' military detention; and Roydon Victor Thornton was ordered to pay costs 75., in dc- " fault,' 2-1 hours' military detention. Jessie Burns was fined X 2 for insobriety.
