'■ BARITONE SLAYS TENOR,

By Telezraph—Press Association—Oopyriehi Madridi March 2-1. During a performance of tho opera "Carmen", in tho town of Argaiuasilla de Alba, in tho lirovince of Ciudad Real, Senor Pardo, the leading baritone, and Henor Martinez, the leading tenor, who were rivals in a lovo affair, fought a duel during the third act. ' 5 The spectators were horrified at tho fieroeness of tho combat. 1 Martinez was killed. Tho third act of "Carmen" is tho •Smugglers' cave scene, and one in which Don Jose (tho tenor) discovers that although he -has allowed "Carmen" to escape from custody, and has deserted from his .regiment to he with her, tho fickle jade has conceived a passion for Escamillo (baritone), tho toreador, who also appears in the scene. The two meet during tho scene, and there aro some passionate interchanges between them. One can imagine tho appropriateness of such a setting and situation for a genuine encounter between two passionate Spaniards in love with the same woman.
