EASTER MONDAY.

CARNIVAL A SUCCESS. GREAT CONCOURSE AT THE PARK. As far as weather went, yesterday was indeed a day of days. Although what remained of- Saturday's southerly lent a. keenness to' the air, the sun shone bravely throughout tho day irom cloudless skies,' and tlie public were able to enjoy tho • 'holiday to the full. It was not weather 111 which to venture far from home, however, and because of that the Citizens 1 ' Carnival at Newtown Park benefited enormously. Tho crowd present at 3.30p.m. yesterday-must have numbered between 15,000 and 20,000. . Tho city reserves should gain considerably by tho manner in which tho money was flying about. Mostly everybody had something to give, and gave it freely, induced by tho sound motive behind the big effort. ■ There is no mistake about tho carnival being a hugo success, and doubts as to tho wisdom of making it an annual fixture have apparently been swept aside. It is suggested that the executive should not disband, but should immediately consider the organisation of a similar carnival for' next during the last 1 week of January, when the Wellington Cup racemeeting and annual sailing regatta are held. Tho weather is at its best in Janu.: ary, the days are longer, and tho liolidaf 1 spirit is more active then. Consequent upon the large number of people in town, tho tramway traffic was heavy throughout the day, and should compensate to a large extent for (lie disappointing receipts on Sunday. A large 'number.of people journeyed to Picton by the Maori, and tlie ferry steamers to Day's « 'Bay and Eastbourne carried a great many ' to the seaside. Last evening every plaea of amusement was crowded to tho doors, '•' and, as many picture theatres as there : are, tliey were not enough to accommodate 1 all who wanted seats at-8 o'clock. The special ferry service to Day's Bay was also_well patronised, and many other people visited Seatoun and Lyall Bay.
