NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Telegraph-Special Eoporter.) Palmerston, MnrclT 2L Though the weather was anything'but promising in tho morning it turned out gloriously fino for the Feilding Cup day. A lnrge crowd nttended, and some fine racing featured, the day's sport. Tho gniug was a trifle on the dead side, and inconsequence the times were slow. The stipendiary steward was in attendance, but, excepting a few inquiries amongst tho riders, no serious questions were asked officially. Byron scored a lucky win in the Cup, this being largely due to the fact that tho race was run at a crawl in tho first part. Jockey Jenkins had his mount in front the whole way, and. when tho field set out to catch him, it was too late. i Mr. J. Ilarlc was not present to see his horse win. I'hroso credited Mr. G. I''. Moore with the Open Flying after having anything but the best of runs. There was a lot of merit in the victory of the, Australian-bred mare, who seems on tho up grade. A field of seventeen faced the starter in the opening event of the day—the \Vuiafa Handicap. Innoladdo was favourite, with General Madero and Squireen next in order. Sweet Zinnia was the first to show out when the tapes rose, and she led to the homo -turn, whore the field closed up. At; the half-distance, Courtly headed his field, and, easily holding them for pace, won by a clear length, with Sepoy a neck in front of Victoris. Waiotnpu was close up fourth. 'Pliroso and Grattan, both of whom looked remarkably well, were the public iancies for the Mangnono Stakes. At tho barrier'rise Hcrinia was quickest to find her feet, and led down the back from Gladiole, Pliroso, and Blue Lake. Gladiolo chopped Pliroso out at the half-mile, but the latter soon recovered her ground, and, securing a lucky run on the rails, got up in time to defeat Ilerniia by a narrow margin. Gladiole was running in third place till tho lost few strides, when Boronia headed her.

There were no scratching in tho open hurdles, which was a good belting race. Rendrock was a slightly better favourite llian Marian. In the preliminary Euroco bolted into l tho trees, and got rid of his rider, but was recaptured in fcimo to start, and he made play at a good pace for about a mile and a hnlf, wh«n Whimper and Marlon joined him, and Leolanter, with liendrook, was alto handy. Marton. jumped the last fence eliglilly in advance of the field, and won by three lengths, with Whimper just clear of liemlroek. Then came Euroco and Lcolanter. Suarny fell at the back of the

course, and Flynu got a Severe shaking. The whole of tho acceptors went to tho Wst for the Hack Hurdles. Knut.sford, Clemency, and Cally Bridge were all well backed. Ascalon led for six furlongs, when tho jumping causod him to tire, and Clemency ran to tho front. Although lie jumped n. couple of fences badly, none or the others could reach the old gelding, who won yery easily. Allure finished well, and outstayed Knutsford. Cally Bridge broke a blood vessel, and was pulled up. C. Jenkins steered Byron to victory in the Cup, and, on returning to scale, got a reception from tlie crowd the like of which has rarely been heard on the Feilding course. The winner was the outsider (but one) of the field, but he jumped out three lengths clear of tho field, and led the .whole way. ft was a middling pace over tho first part of the race, and this helped tho .Martian gelding to score. Passing the stand the first, time, Byron led from Lord Renown, with the others bunched. Down tho back thero was a lot of changing a.mong the ruck, but tlta two leaders hsul a couple of lengths' advantage as they swept into the straight. Lady Meiischiltoff now got clear of the others, but could not overhaul the leaders, and Bvron won by a neck, with Lady Mcnschikolf the same distance away. Kina, Moutoa Girl, and Con the Sha.'igliraun were the next- to finish.

Huia was favourite in the Hack AA'elter Handicap, but the distance was just a little beyond him, and, after jumping out well and lending for 1 over seven furlongs, the weight told, and he was beaten out of a place. I.eonta, who was also heavily backed, got up in the last stride, and won by a head from Top Note, with Charge a neck away third. Denise "Orme, in A. Hall's colours, was <\ very pronounced favourite in the Ongo Hack race, but she got a very bad pas. sage, and, after going right round tho field, was beaten into third place. Lady Louisa appeared to be a winner as they raced into tlw straight, but then Klkmaiu came with a telling run, and won by thrco leugths. Sylvia May and The Diver ran in the'lead for about three furlongs, when both were dqne with. North East and Patronale divided favouritism in the Open AYelter Handicap. The .field left tho mark well together, with the exception of Monologue, who was left a few lengths behind. Vibration was the linst to become, prominent, but Distinction soon headed him and led to tho turn, where took charge, and won by a length from Passadena, who came fast. Coromandel - was prominent the whole way, and finished third. North East began badly, but ho was running on well at the finish.
