'i'no council coatend mat, wni.e population lias ik-cu attracted to Aew lor years, a,very large proportion oi immigrants have been compcdiea to go to Australia, and that, tneraoro, it is a iiagrant and unwarrantable waste of public money to assist im--migrants, it states that many hundreds ' ol immigrants to Australia liayo been disappointed by filming the conditions and opportunities ot employment so diiierent from the glowing pictures of. the immigration agents and taie shipping companies, . and that there are hundreds of unemployed in each of the Australian States, some , ol whom must come back to these shorus. ■ I The council denies the accuracy of stutements as to shortage of labour, and Bays ) that, in any case, to meet the demand, • women and children are required. This, it says, means that cheaper workers, not -. more, workers, are required, this meaning the undermining of workers' conditions. After referring to unemployment in llio , boot trade, the council says ■ deliberately that an organised attempt is being nmdo . to undermine industrial conditions by flooding the labour market, with the object of reducing wages. The manifesto concludes by urging the Government not . to continue a policy which must bring about the dislocation of industrial conditions, as well as throw many workers out of employment.

FIFTEEN STRAW STACKS BURNED. , Christchurch, March 23. Fifteen stacks of ontsheaf straw, tlio property of a farmer at Ellesmcro Bridge, were destroyed by fire on Saturday morn- ' ing. Later in tho day tho Asliburton 1 ■police arrested a man on a charge of arson in/ connection with the matter. Tho stacks'wero insured in tho London and Lancashire office. MYSTERIOUS/CAMBRIDGE FIRES. Cambridge, March 23. Another blaze occurred at Cambridge*, about midnight last night, a four-roomed '' house and contents being completely demolished. The occupants, named Hughes, wore away for tlio week-end. The origin of tho fire is a mystery; A great spirit of. - unrest prevails among residents at what they regard, as a repetition of tho recent ' firo epidemic. :
